T. Rowe Price teaching kids good stuff about saving, investing and goal setting
By Dian Vujovich
T. Rowe Price recently added a downloadable kids activity book “Journey to your Dream Goal” to their The Great Piggy Bank Adventure world. From what I’ve seen, this activity book isn’t just for 3 and 4 year olds. Any older kid with an interest in investing, as well as moms and dads, aunts and uncles, brothers and sisters and even friends can all learn from it.
In “Journey to your Dream Goal” participants will learn to be financial “smarty pants” as they scroll through and work the pages of this activity book that includes crossword puzzles, money mazes and learning the “language of money”.
Like all good educational lessons, the first activity participants will be asked to do is to set a goal:A money goal. And, what better place to start because it’s something most of us frequently need to be reminded of. After all, who hasn’t forgotten a financial goal they’ve made even if it is a simply one like saving $5 a month or a week. Or, remembered the goal but decided to postpone it because you’d though of a better way to spend that fiver. In the end, however, that is the very first step in accumulating wealth and meeting a financial goal. The second step, of course, is to follow through and fund the first step.
Kids will also learn about inflation by seeing examples of how much things cost today and then how much they might cost 20 years down the road. For instance, a beverage that costs $1 today will cost $1.81 in 20 years if inflation averaged 3 percent a year.
This activity guide is one of the many free educational programs T. Rowe Price has available. All of them worth your time. In fact, the next time you’re at Disney World, make it a point to stop by The Great Piggy Bank Adventure, an interactive exhibit at the INNOVENTIONS at Epcot.
